Gov. Brad Little stood outside the Idaho Statehouse earlier this week warning Idahoans about rising wildfire costs. His own record tells the other half of the story: years of tax giveaways pushed by his party and signed into law have left the state with fewer resources to meet costs every state leader knew were coming, with the wildfire fund sitting at $0 as Idaho heads into a dangerous fire season.

In response, Senate Democratic Leader Melissa Wintrow released the following statement:

“It does not take a crystal ball to know Idaho has to pay for fire season. But the wildfire fund is empty. Republican leaders chose tax giveaways for the wealthy and well-connected over responsible planning. Idaho is now putting fire costs on the credit card and pushing the bill into the next budget. That means more pressure on schools, public safety, health care, and the people working to keep our communities safe. Our firefighters, first responders, and communities deserve better than a state budget that waits for the smoke to clear before taking fire season seriously. Idaho Democrats will keep fighting for budgets that plan ahead and put Idaho communities first.”
