Today, Senate Republicans passed a public safety budget after acknowledging on the floor that it would cause real harm. In response, Senate Democratic Leader Melissa Wintrow released the following statement:

“Listening to Republicans debate this bill, you would have thought they were building the case to vote no. On the floor, Republicans spoke to the harm this budget would cause and said we can do better. Then they voted to pass it anyway. They know Idaho State Police are already stretched thin. They know cutting reentry programs will drive up long-term costs and make our communities less safe. They know cuts in juvenile corrections could deepen staffing shortages, weaken services for vulnerable kids, and expose the state to serious legal risk. Senate Democrats voted no, because our votes matched our words. If Republicans knew this budget would hurt public safety, they should have voted no and supported responsible solutions that protect our communities, including using reserve funds and restoring revenue instead of forcing harmful cuts.”
