Today the Idaho Senate rejected SB 1375 after Republicans broke with their party over cuts to Medicaid and other essential Health and Welfare services.
In response, Senate Democratic Leader Melissa Wintrow released the following statement:
“Senate Republicans finally said out loud what Democrats have been warning for weeks. These cuts would have hurt Idahoans. They were right to reject this budget.
“These cuts would have made it harder for Idahoans to see a doctor, get mental health care, find stable support, and stay out of crisis. It also would have meant cuts to family supports and other programs that help keep kids safe and families stable.
“Idaho Democrats helped bring the consequences of these Medicaid cuts into the open through a public hearing at the Capitol and town halls across Idaho, where families, providers, and communities made clear that these cuts would mean fewer services, less access to care, and higher costs down the road.
“Now there is an opportunity to do better. Idaho has more than $1.7 billion in rainy day funds, and there are responsible ways to restore revenue that do not balance the budget by ripping health care away from seniors, kids, people with disabilities, and working families.”
