Today, Idaho Senate Democratic Leader Melissa Wintrow and Idaho House Democratic Leader Ilana Rubel released the following joint statement on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade

“On the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we’re reminded that the most personal health decisions should be made by patients, families, and doctors, not by politicians.

“Since Roe was overturned, Idaho has enforced one of the most extreme abortion bans in the nation. Medical providers have been driven out, maternity care has become harder to access, and patients facing complicated pregnancies are being forced to travel out of state or wait until their condition becomes a life-threatening crisis. That is not how a responsible state treats its people.

“These dangerous laws create fear and uncertainty in exam rooms and emergency departments. When doctors are threatened with criminal penalties, care gets delayed, and families shoulder the risk.

“Idahoans value privacy, freedom, and responsibility. Our laws should reflect those values. Instead, these bans threaten physicians with criminal penalties and tie the hands of medical professionals when pregnant patients need urgent care.

“We’re not accepting this as our new normal. Idahoans are organizing to restore reproductive rights through the ballot initiative process so voters, not politicians, can set a reasonable standard that protects health, privacy, and freedom.

“We will keep fighting in the Legislature, in our communities, and at the ballot box until every Idahoan can make their own reproductive health decisions without fear, delay, or political interference.”
