On Monday, the Idaho Supreme Court announced its decision to block the implementation of Senate Bill 1110, which would have essentially destroyed Idahoans’ initiative and referendum rights.
All House and Senate Democrats voted against the bill, and after its passage, pushed for it to be vetoed by Gov. Brad Little, who instead signed it into law, prompting the lawsuit.
Democratic lawmakers applauded the court’s decision, and expressed outrage at the egregious waste of taxpayer dollars spent by GOP leadership in defense of the bill — an amount totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars.
“This bill never should have been passed in the first place as it was in clear violation of the ballot initiative rights established in the Idaho Constitution. Elected representatives should be working to protect the people’s constitutional rights, not take those rights away as the Idaho GOP did here,” House Democratic Leader Ilana Rubel said. “I am very proud that every Democrat voted against this bill because we recognize the importance of citizens’ rights, and we’ll continue to fight for them.”
